Elementary Years - Grade 1 to 6

Strong Foundations. Expanding Minds. Growing Independence.

A School That Knows & Challenges Your Child

Grades 1–6

The elementary years are among the most important in a child’s educational journey.

It is during these years that children develop the reading, writing, mathematical, and thinking skills that shape their future learning. They begin to understand their individual strengths, discover new interests, build lasting habits, and take increasing responsibility for themselves.

At Seneca Hill, our Elementary School program combines strong academic instruction with enriched learning experiences, personalized attention, inquiry, Engineering & STEM, and intentional character development.

Our goal is to help every student build the knowledge, confidence, and independence needed for the next stage of their education.

Personalized Attention.
High Academic Expectations.

Our smaller classes allow teachers to understand students as individuals, recognize opportunities for growth, and provide purposeful academic support and challenge.

We place a strong emphasis on developing foundational skills while giving students opportunities to deepen their understanding, extend their thinking, and explore meaningful questions.

Students are encouraged to set goals, respond to feedback, take pride in their progress, and recognize that sustained effort and thoughtful strategies contribute to achievement.

At Seneca Hill, personalized learning is not about expecting less. It is about understanding each student well enough to help them achieve more.

One Grade, One Classroom.

At Seneca Hill, every grade has its own dedicated classroom. We do not combine grades into split classes, allowing teachers to deliver grade-specific instruction, maintain consistent academic expectations, and provide focused support tailored to each stage of learning.

A Strong Academic Foundation

Developing Knowledge, Fluency, and Understanding

Our Elementary School program builds on Ontario Curriculum expectations while incorporating enriched academic experiences that encourage curiosity, reasoning, and the application of knowledge.

Language & Literacy

Learning to read. Reading to learn. Communicating with confidence.

Strong literacy skills are essential to learning in every subject.

In the early elementary years, students strengthen foundational reading skills through explicit instruction in phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

As they progress, students encounter increasingly complex texts, develop stronger comprehension and analytical skills, and learn to interpret information, evaluate ideas, and consider different perspectives.

Writing instruction develops from sentence construction and early composition into more sophisticated narrative, informational, persuasive, and analytical writing.

Through reading, writing, discussion, and oral presentations, students develop the ability to communicate their ideas clearly and thoughtfully.

Mathematics

Building fluency. Strengthening reasoning. Solving problems.

Our mathematics program develops numerical understanding, mathematical fluency, and confidence in problem-solving.

Students build knowledge across number sense, operations, algebra, geometry, spatial reasoning, measurement, data, and financial literacy.

Purposeful practice helps students become more efficient and accurate, while mathematical investigations and problem-solving tasks encourage them to explain their thinking, compare strategies, identify patterns, and apply their knowledge.

We want students to understand not simply how to arrive at an answer, but why their reasoning works.

Science & Social Studies

Questioning the world. Investigating ideas. Building understanding.

Science and social studies invite students to explore the world around them and better understand their place within it.

Through scientific investigation, students learn to observe, predict, experiment, interpret evidence, and communicate conclusions.

Social studies encourages students to explore communities, geography, history, citizenship, culture, and human relationships.

Our inquiry-based approach provides opportunities to connect knowledge across disciplines and investigate questions that matter beyond the classroom.

French, the Arts & Physical Education

A broad education creates more opportunities to grow.

French language learning develops communication skills and introduces students to different linguistic and cultural perspectives.

Music, visual arts, drama, and dance provide opportunities for creative expression, performance, collaboration, and artistic understanding.

Health and physical education support physical development, movement skills, wellness, teamwork, and the habits associated with healthy living.

These subjects complement academic development and help students discover interests and abilities beyond traditional classroom tasks.

Engineering, Technology, and Inquiry

Learning to Apply Knowledge

At Seneca Hill, Engineering & STEM is an important part of our enriched elementary experience.

Through hands-on engineering challenges, students use scientific and mathematical knowledge to design solutions, build prototypes, test ideas, and improve their work.

Digital literacy introduces students to technology as a tool for learning, productivity, problem-solving, and creative expression.

Students develop skills in coding, computer productivity, digital communication, and responsible technology use.

Inquiry-based learning provides another opportunity to connect subjects through meaningful questions, research, investigation, and reflection.

These experiences encourage students to develop curiosity, creativity, analytical thinking, perseverance, and confidence when approaching unfamiliar problems.

Two Important Stages of Learning

Grades 1–3:
Building the Foundation

The primary years mark an important transition from the exploratory learning of Kindergarten toward increasingly structured academic expectations.

Students develop essential reading, writing, and mathematical skills while learning how to participate confidently in a classroom community.

Learning emphasizes:

  • Foundational literacy, reading fluency, comprehension, and written communication.
  • Number sense, mathematical operations, and early problem-solving strategies.
  • Curiosity and investigation through science and social studies.
  • Early engineering, coding, and digital literacy experiences.
  • Organization, routines, collaboration, and the development of responsibility.

Through guided learning and hands-on experiences, children begin to see themselves as capable, confident learners.

Grades 4–6:
Deepening Understanding & Independence

As students progress through the junior elementary years, academic expectations become more sophisticated.

Students encounter increasingly complex reading materials, extend their written communication, and develop greater depth in mathematical and scientific reasoning.

They are encouraged to conduct investigations, support conclusions with evidence, manage longer assignments, and communicate their thinking with clarity.

Learning emphasizes:

  • Deeper reading comprehension, analytical thinking, and more complex writing.
  • Mathematical fluency, reasoning, modelling, and multi-step problem-solving.
  • Independent research, inquiry, and interdisciplinary learning.
  • Increasingly complex engineering and digital projects.
  • Goal-setting, time management, self-management, and personal accountability.

These years are also an important time for strengthening confidence, independence, and readiness for the academic demands of Junior High.
